Flu Vaccine Pandemrix and Narcolepsy: Finnish Victims Granted Compensation
79 children got more than a flu shot on the fateful day they got the Pandemrix vaccine. Almost 80 people between the ages of 4 and 19 years old in Finland got a serious disorder called narcolepsy along with the flu vaccine.
Their lives will never be the same.
And an astounding 96% of these children and young people have bouts of cataplexy, hallucinations, or paralyzing physical collapses, all which sometimes accompany narcolepsy--and did accompany it in almost all of these young people.
That the Pandemrix flu vaccine was directly linked to the abnormally large number of cases of narcolepsy in children and young people who had received the vaccine in 2009 and 2010 has long been suspected.
Now it has been confirmed.
In September, the Helsinki Times reported that the link between the flu vaccine Pandemrix, made by GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, and a 13-fold increase in cases of narcolepsy in children and young people has been established.
"A Finnish government agency on Thursday confirmed a link between Pandemrix, an influenza vaccine, and a spate of narcolepsy cases in children and young people.
"The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) added that the vaccine had raised the risk of developing narcolepsy about 13-fold in people aged between 4 and 19," informed Helsinki Times.
According to the website of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, "Narcolepsy is a disorder that causes periods of extreme daytime sleepiness. The disorder also may cause muscle weakness.
"Most people who have narcolepsy have trouble sleeping at night. Some people who have the disorder fall asleep suddenly, even if they're in the middle of talking, eating, or another activity."
To add to the already bleak picture, the NHLBI website goes on to explain other ways narcolepsy can affect those who suffer from it:
Narcolepsy can also cause
Cataplexy: This condition causes a sudden loss of muscle tone while you're awake. Muscle weakness can affect certain parts of your body or your whole body. For example, if cataplexy affects your hand, you may drop what you're holding. Strong emotions often trigger this weakness. It may last seconds or minutes.
Hallucinations: These vivid 'dreams' occur while falling asleep or waking up.
Sleep paralysis: This condition prevents you from moving or speaking while waking up and sometimes while falling asleep. Sleep paralysis usually goes away within a few minutes.
As mentioned above, an astounding 96% of children and youths with Pandemrix-caused narcolepsy also suffer at least one of the above frightening and debilitating conditions.
Strong criticism has been leveled at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, which recommended the vaccine for children. Pandemrix's risks for the age group affected were minimized by one of the agency's top physicians before the vaccine's narcolepsy-causing effects were established.
Now, in October 2011, Helsingin Sanomat International Edition reports that the children and young people who developed narcolepsy as a result of the Pandemrix flu vaccine will be compensated. This will include, but is not limited to, lifelong compensation for those who received the flu vaccine in question and become permanently disabled from the resultant narcolepsy.
Although apparently all those who developed this life-changing disease after a Pandemrix vaccine jab were discovered to have an inherited trait which increases their risk of narcolepsy, the Finnish health agency's head of vaccines, Terhi Kilpi, believes that this risk factor should in no way reduce a victim's eligibility for receiving compensation.
"'On the contrary, it should actually strengthen the overall grounds for compensation. The link of narcolepsy with a genetic risk reinforces the idea that this is a process that requires external irritants to the immune system. Genetic factors are not the only cause of narcolepsy,"' he is quoted in Helsingin Sanomat International Edition. "'When the disease unexpectedly increases so much, it is logical to think that the external factor in these cases was the vaccine,' Kilpi says."
We applaud Kilpi's attitude, which is more honest than the attitudes of many vaccine advocates, who point to supposed genetic predisposition to a given adverse vaccine reaction as though the genes were the cause of the adverse vaccine reaction, rather than the vaccine itself being the cause of the adverse vaccine reaction! After all, the genes were there all along, but it wasn't until the vaccine was administered that the adverse vaccine reaction occurred!
A group of insurance companies called the Finnish Pharmaceutical Insurance Pool will pay the compensation, with the Finnish government paying what the group does not.
Our urgent plea to each of our friends and readers is to please, please thoroughly research every single vaccine you are considering allowing your children to receive, or receiving yourself, before you make your decision. And it isyour decision, no matter what others may say, or how resolutely they may try to intimidate you. Remember:
That should be considered long which can be decided but once. --Syrus, Publilius
Flu vaccine questions abound. Should you get the flu vaccine this year? Should your children? Is it safe? Is it dangerous? Is it even effective? Here are eight questions "designed to educate consumers about the importance of making fully informed vaccine decisions," according to the NVIC.
