Let's explore for a moment the power of a paradigm shift and investigate the forces that are released when we change our paradigm.
Keep in mind the reason we’re discussing these shifts: to help us see the need for new ways to think about health, understand where health comes from, and make truly informed, educated health care decisions.
This is very different from making health care decisions based on the strong conditioning we’ve all been exposed to for many years. This shift can and should greatly influence our health strategies and plans.
Below Stephen Covey explains what this shift is.
"The term Paradigm Shift was introduced by Thomas Kuhn in his highly influential landmark book, “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions”. Kuhn shows how almost every significant breakthrough in the field of scientific endeavor is first a break with tradition, with old ways of thinking, with old paradigms.
"For Ptolemy, the great Egyptian astronomer, the earth was the center of the universe.
"But Copernicus created a Paradigm Shift, and a great deal of resistance and persecution as well, by placing the sun at the center. Suddenly, everything took on a different interpretation.
"Until the germ theory was developed, a high percentage of women and children died during childbirth, and one could understand why. In military skirmishes, more men were dying from small wounds and diseases than from the major traumas on the front lines. But as soon as the germ theory was developed, a whole new paradigm, a better, improved way of understanding what was happening made dramatic, significant medical improvement possible.
Not all Paradigm Shifts are in positive directions.
"But whether they shift us in positive or negative directions, whether they are instantaneous or developmental, shifts in our paradigms move us from one way of seeing the world to another. And those shifts create powerful change. Our paradigms, correct or incorrect, are the sources of our attitudes and behaviors, and ultimately our relationships with others."
(from Stephen Covey's book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People)
The shift modern medicine took towards intervention rather than prevention, and towards pharmaceuticals and invasive procedures rather than diet and lifestyle changes has, in many respects, not been a positive one.
If we want to experience optimal health and the healing touch that God and natural health remedies can bring, we must be willing to challenge our health care beliefs, our maps. We must make a determined search for an authentic road map, one whose solutions work synergistically with our bodies, restoring rather than weakening.
